Ravi Shastri

After taking the position from Anil Kumble as an Indian coach, Ravi Shastri is very clear on one thing that ‘the captain is the boss of the team. He and his backroom staff are only to help the players are in the right frame of mind to perform at their best.

Shastri was a team director just before Kumble was appointed as coach last year, he said disappointed when he was overlooked as head coach in 2016. However, after Kumble’s contract expired in June 2017, BCCI decided not to renew it and sent out an advertisement seeking candidates for the position.

The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman finding India’s next coach told the BCCI that Kumble remained their first choice. But Kumble stepped down after realising the differences between him and the captain Virat Kohli had become “untenable.”

Talking about earlier selection, recent new Indian coach Shastri said to ‘Times of India’ “I had not really wrapped my head around the gravity of the situation. There was nothing personal. I really hadn’t begun to understand the seriousness of this. But when I sat down and gave it a serious thought, I began to tell myself.”

“Here is a unit that I have been part of and enjoyed a great working relationship with. Having been part of the unit that helped it become No. 1, I thought the onus is on me now to make it work again, in the best interests of everybody involved. That’s when I knew it’s time for me to apply again.”

Taking about happy to let the captain charge, Shastri said “It’s always the captain’s team and it is the leader who calls the shots. That’s how it has always worked. A coach’s role, effectively speaking, is to stay in the background and let the onus be on the players.”

Ravi Shastri

“The coach and support staff’s role is to get the players in the most brilliant frame of mind to execute things and if done effectively, it brings enjoyment to the player’s game.”

Shastri said about his relationship with the support staff, “I’m simply going to press the refresh button and begin from where I left. I know what I’m stepping into, players have an idea of what’s coming, so that ticks the first box.”

“Just to give you an idea, I won’t be spending the first six to eight months in the job warming up to the team. That had already been accomplished in my previous stint. This time, it’s going to be about getting on the job from day one.”

Zaheer Khan

Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) on Thursday wrote a letter in a plain paper to the Committee of Administrators (CoA) chief Vinod Rai and BCCI acting Secretary Amitabh Choudhary, asking them to clear the air with a view to the appointment of the Indian men’s cricket team head coach and specialists.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India’s CAC Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, and VVS Laxman selected Ravi Shastri as the Indian men’s cricket head coach and Zaheer Khan as bowling coach and Rahul Dravid as batting coach.

The claim leveled against CAC is that the committee goes beyond its brief with Zaheer and Dravid as support staff. “There have been suggestions that the CAC has exceeded its ambit in going with Mr. Khan and Mr. Dravid, and that these two legends of Indian cricket have been foisted on the head coach.”

“We also bring to your notice that the mail you had circulated to us saying that we had an absolutely free hand in picking the coach of the Indian cricket team. Also, we did inform you over the phone, along with Rahul Johri (BCCI CEO) and Amitabh Choudhary, of all that transpired immediately after the meeting was over.”

Zaheer Khan

“As we have outlined, that is not the case, and it is imperative that the public is made aware of the reality. We could do it ourselves, of course, but we don’t want to further queer the pitch. So we would respectfully request you to clear the air and set the record straight in this regard,” CAC members wrote this letter.

According to the reports, Shastri wants Bharat Arun as full-time bowling coach. As both of them have been worked together during his director from August 2014 to March 2016 and the new coach wanted a meeting.

“After taking the decision on his selection, the CAC consulted him and decided on having Batting and Bowling consultants on the overseas tour-to-tour basis, as per the requirement of the team.”

New Indian coach Shastri said in several interviews that he would be happy to have the knowledge of Zaheer and Dravid on foreign tours. CoA member said to The Indian Express that the BCCI acting secretary and CEO to be directed to speaks to the new Indian coach about this matter.

COA

The Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) has asked to BCCI to announce the new Indian men’s cricket head coach today. The boards of Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) had delayed the announcement after taking interview of five candidates on Monday. But, COA doesn’t want any delay, therefore, directed the BCCI.

The CAC member Ganguly said on Monday, “We want to speak to Virat Kohli, once he is back from America, all three of us, the respective people concerned, we will explain to him that the coaches want to function in a certain way and make sure everybody is on the same page once we make the announcement. Once, we make the announcement, it has to be till the World Cup.”

The CoA member said to The Indian Express that “We were actually very generously wanting to build up consensus and that’s why we were waiting for them (BCCI members) to hold the SGM.”

COA

“We held back (the status report) for that only. But now they are totally disruptive. We actually spent the last four-five months trying to build consensus, facing criticism in the process.”

“See, we can’t enforce the new constitution on the BCCI or state associations. The court has to do it. The status report has asked for directions from the court, making it very clear that the CoA has tried everything possible but they (BCCI members) are not coming around, thereby making us recommend the imposition of the new constitution. Three-four elements in the entire BCCI are disrupting the process.”

Sourav Ganguly

The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) has announced that the finalist candidate for a head coach will be late as they needed more time and wanted to discuss with skipper Virat Kohli before the decision is taken.

Former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly said “Whatever, I say, I take Laxman and Sachin into confidence. It’s a decision we all three have taken. We have interviewed all the candidates except Phil Simmons who has not been available for the interview and we have decided that we will hold on for the time being for the announcement of the coach.”

“We need a few more days and talk to a few more people especially the captain and then make an announcement because we feel that there is no hurry at the moment.”

Talking about team India that played West Indies series without the coach, Ganguly said “For the Sri Lanka tour coming up in a week’s time, board headed by Amitabh (Choudhary), Rahul (Johri), Vinod ji (Rai), Anirudh (Choudhary), the board will probably continue with the same set for the time being.”

Sourav Ganguly

The CAC wanted to have some discussion with captain Kohli before announcing the new coach. “We want to speak to Virat Kohli, once he is back from America, all three of us, the respective people concerned, we will explain to him that the coaches want to function in a certain way and make sure everybody is on the same page once we make the announcement.”

“Once, we make the announcement, it has to be till the World Cup and to be honest what we have heard from the coaches today is nothing different from what we heard last year and the way things have gone. We have been happy after hearing to what and how they want to go about the job. So for that point, we will have everybody on the same page and take the call in the course of time.”

The member of CAC VVS Laxman said that the candidates interviewed were Virender Sehwag, Lalchand Rajput, Richard Pybus, Ravi Shastri and Tom Moody.

Ganguly said that the Indian cricket board and CAC are in no hurry picking for the new coach of the Indian men’s cricket head coach. “We are in no hurry and we are not just looking at the Sri Lanka tour because it is a long tour. The thing that is important for us that everybody is in synchronisation of the way forward because we don’t want to see six-months down the line doing something different.”

Sourav Ganguly

“I thought the presentations were outstanding, exactly what coaches want to do in the system because we have played the game. We have been under different coaches. They all have different methods but the crux of the matter doesn’t change. That’s why we think Virat Kohli whom we respect so much is an important part of the cog.”

“I was captain, Laxman was one of the best players in the world so we understand where it goes. We will take a call which is the best way forward for the team and the boys. They are going to play and they are going to give results to the country and that’s what most important for us.”

Asked about the conclusion of the process, Ganguly said “Process is concluded and as I said we need to speak to people who will matter because as out job finishes, their job starts and that is more important. That’s the way we look at it and that’s the way we would be addressing. It’s all done and the key of the moment is how we are going to go forward.”
