Luis Enrique Announced To Step Down As Barcelona Manager

Barcelona manager Luis Enrique has announced on Wednesday that he will leave as manager of Barcelona when his agreement expires at the end of the season.

He made a shocking announcement stepping down as manager following the team win 6-1 against Sporting Gijon in the Spanish League.

He has been continuously asked whether he would perform to the club further than current campaign however he refused to respond.

On Wednesday, Enrique said in post-match news conference “I need to rest. I won’t be the coach of Barcelona next season. It was a very difficult decision for me, very well-thought out.”

“The reason clearly had to do with the way of life I need to have in this profession, constantly having to find solutions, constantly trying to improve my team. That means very little time to rest, very little time to disconnect. After this season it will be good for me to get some rest.”


The decision of stepping down reports was first given to the player when they are in the locker room after the match at Camp Nou.

The 28-year-old Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic said that “He told us about the decision and we have to accept it. We want to finish the season with victories and enjoy what’s left of it.”

Enrique said to the club during the pre-season, he was considering not to come back after his agreement expired at the end of this season. “I would like to thank the club for all the confidence that it had in me throughout my years here, both as a player and as a coach.”


Barcelona president Josep Bartomeu said that Enrique had confirmed his decision to step down a few days ago. He said “We accept Luis Enrique’s decision. He has been a great coach. Now we have to finish the season the best possible way.”

“Luis Enrique has helped us succeed, and he can still help us. The players are motivated to make sure that happens.”

Barcelona is still struggling to win three competitions, “There are three months left, and we are in a difficult situation, especially in one competition (the Champions League). But with the help of everyone – and if the stars align – we can turn things around (against Paris Saint-Germain on March 8). My dedication during the coming three months will be total.”
